Hiking

More than a million acres of public land, a national forest, five National Park Service units and 35-plus state parks and forests. Terrain runs from flat rail-trail to open heath barrens above 4,000 feet. The signature day hikes — Dolly Sods, Blackwater Falls, Endless Wall, Seneca Rocks, Coopers Rock — are all short, but the state's real depth is in its unmarked and lightly traveled backcountry.

Hiking & Trails Season · Year-round All 79 places

Most of West Virginia's best-known hikes are under five miles. Longer and less-travelled routes exist throughout the Monongahela National Forest, but they are unblazed and require map and compass work.

Over a million acres of public land, though signage is far lighter than hikers from other states typically expect, particularly in designated wilderness.

Where we'd send you

If you want the strange one

Beartown State Park

Beartown State Park. A half-mile boardwalk through a maze of house-sized sandstone blocks split by deep crevasses that hold ice into June. Forty minutes, and unlike anywhere else in Appalachia.

Full guide to Beartown State Park →
Practical note

Monongahela National Forest wilderness trails are unblazed on purpose and junctions are frequently unsigned. Dolly Sods in particular sends more people off-route than anywhere else in the state. Bring a map you can read without a battery.

What to know before you go

  • Monongahela National Forest trails are often lightly blazed — carry a map and GPS
  • Rhododendron and mountain laurel make off-trail travel difficult
  • Hunting seasons overlap prime autumn hiking; wear blaze orange on WMAs

Questions people ask

What is the best hike in West Virginia?
Most-recommended day hikes include the Endless Wall Trail in the New River Gorge, Bear Rocks and the Rohrbaugh Plains in Dolly Sods, Blackwater Falls and Lindy Point, Seneca Rocks, and the Coopers Rock overlook.
Are West Virginia trails well marked?
Varies widely. State park trails are generally well signed. Monongahela National Forest and wilderness trails are often minimally blazed, and Dolly Sods in particular requires real navigation skills.
