Appalachian Trail, warm rivers, limestone streams

Eastern Panhandle

The Appalachian Trail crosses the Potomac at Harpers Ferry and runs roughly 24 miles through this region. Elevations are lower, temperatures warmer and rainfall lower than the rest of the state. Streams here run over limestone rather than sandstone, and the Cacapon and Lost rivers provide gentle canoe water and smallmouth fishing. The region is about 90 minutes from Washington, D.C., which accounts for both its visitation and the number of active watershed and land trust organizations working here.

The Eastern Panhandle is the part of West Virginia most East Coast visitors reach first, and it differs from the rest of the state: lower elevation, warmer temperatures, less rainfall, limestone bedrock, and about ninety minutes from Washington, D.C.

Appalachian Trail culture, gentle rivers, and the most development pressure of any region in the state.

What we'd do here

One day here

Maryland Heights early, before parking fills, breakfast in Harpers Ferry, a Shenandoah float in the afternoon, and the confluence at the Point in late hour.

Practical note

Harpers Ferry parking fills by mid-morning on any decent weekend and the town is tiny. Use the visitor center shuttle, or take the train from Washington and skip the problem entirely.
